In the 1st quarter, freight transport at ports and by rail reduced significantly

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that, compared to the 1st quarter of 2019, in the 1st quarter of 2020 volume of freights by rail has dropped by 48.7 %, but freight turnover at ports – by 29.3 %.

In the 1st quarter of 2020, 6 million tonnes of freights were transported by rail, freight transport fell by 5.7 million tonnes or 48.7 %. Reduction in transport was observed from the beginning of this year: in January volume of freights transported decreased by 52.2 %, in February – by 47.4 %, but in March – by 46 %.

National freights by rail comprised 0.4 million tonnes – 23.9 % more than in the previous period. In international traffic the volume of freight carried by rail reduced by 50.5 %.

In the 1st quarter of 2020 the cargo loaded and unloaded at Latvian ports comprised 12.1 million tonnes, which is 29.3 % less than in the 1st quarter of 2019. Freight turnover at Riga port was 6.4 million tonnes, 23.9 % less, at Ventspils port – 3.7 million tonnes or 41.7 % less, at Liepāja port – 1.6 million tonnes or 16.3 % less, but at minor ports – 0.5 million tonnes or 12.9 % less.

Reduction in freight turnover at ports was observed in all first three months of this year: in January freight turnover decreased by 28.8 %, in February – by 31.6 %, but in March – by 27.5 %.

In the 1st quarter of 2020 the cargo loaded at ports comprised 9.6 million tonnes, which is 35.4 % less than in the 1st quarter of 2019. Volume of main freights shipped reduced. Most significant was drop of volume of coal loaded onto ships by 4 million tonnes or 74.9 %. Oil products shipped reduced by 0.8 million tonnes or 27.6 %. The volume of timber loaded decreased by 0.3 million tonnes or 22.5 %, of freights in containers – by 7.4 %, of roll on/roll off – by 3.1 %, of mineral fertilisers – by 22.6 %, while volume of grain and grain products loaded rose by 7.2 %, but volume of wood chips – by 10 %.

In the 1st quarter volume of cargo unloaded at ports increased by 10.5 % and reached 2.5 million tonnes. Volume of oil products unloaded rose significantly – by 0.3 million tonnes or 57.5 %. But the volume of unloaded freights in containers and roll on/ roll off fell by 1 % and 3.7 %, respectively.
