Activities of tourism companies
Data on tourism companies are used to identify the number of tourism companies and to analyse detailed information on the served Latvian and foreign guests in travel agencies and by tour operators in Latvia; indicators on the number of incoming and outgoing tourists in breakdown by country and length of trip.
Concepts and definitions
Tour operators and travel agents are tourism companies.
Number of tourists served
Number of residents and non-residents served.
Package or complex tourism service
Combination of at least two different types of tourism services in the same trip or holiday purpose. Complex tourism service consists of transport, accommodation, catering and other trip related ancillary services combined by one service provider, and that is sold for total price.
EU-15 – 15 member states of European Union: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom.
EU-25 – EU-15 and Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Malta, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia after EU enlargement on 1 May 2004.
EU-27 (2007-2013) – EU-25 and Romania and Bulgaria after EU enlargement on 1 January 2007.
EU-28 – EU-27 (2007-2013) and Croatia after enlargement of the EU on 1 July 2013.
EU-27 (as of 2020) – 27 Member States of the European Union, i.e., all countries of the EU-28 except for United Kingdom after it stopped being the member of the EU on 31 January 2020.
CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)
Commonwealth of Independent States: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia (since September 2009 no longer belongs to the CIS), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan (associate member), Ukraine (associate member), Uzbekistan.
Data collection and statistical processing
Survey method and data source
Data are obtained carrying out complete merchant survey of travel agencies and tour operator services providers, and data are compiled from statistics report form No. 1-tourism "Report on the activity of tourism merchants”. Merchants are selected from database of the Ministry of Economy on travel agents and tour operators.
Report on the activity of tourism merchants (No. 1-tourism) is submitted by merchants whose economic activity corresponds to Statistical classification of economic activities (NACE Rev.2) class 79.12 "Tour operator services”, as well as merchants providing both tour operator and travel agency services.
Data are collected and published using:
- Classification of Administrative Territories and Territorial Units of the Republic of Latvia (CATTU);
- Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE Rev. 2);
- Eurostat standard code list of geopolitical entities.
The data published are final and are not revised.
