Results of the survey of Latvian residents about the domestic trips made in 2010

The survey on the domestic trips of Latvia population conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that, if compared to 2009, the number of recreational trips made in 2010 has reduced by 15%. Number of recreational trips comprised 13.2 million, of which 3.3 million were recreational trips with overnight stays - 1.9% less if compared to the year before.

Out of all recreational trips the most common destination (30.7%) was Riga region, 21.0% of recreational trips were made to Vidzeme, 20.6% - to Kurzeme, 17.3% - to Latgale, and 10.4% - to Zemgale. 

The majority (87%) of residents travelling for recreational purposes and staying overnight were accommodated in private lodgings (at relatives and friends, in summer cottages, in rented houses and flats, etc.). The average length of trips with overnight stays comprised 2.3 visitor nights, and during the trip travellers on average spent LVL 20.1 – an increase of LVL 0.8, if compared to 2009.Recreational trips with overnight stays were mostly preferred by women (53.0%). The majority of travellers (45.6%) were aged 25-44 years.

The number of business trips with overnight stays, in turn, constituted 223.7 thousand -12% less than in 2009. During such trips one traveller on average spent LVL 30.2. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 71.8%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.

Main reasons obstructing Latvia population from trips were financial conditions (55%), lack of time (14%), and lack of interest (7%). Other reasons were mentioned by 24% respondents.
