Results of the survey of Latvian residents about trips made in the country in the 3rd quart. of 2007

The results of a survey of the Latvian population about the trips made in the 3rd quarter of 2007 conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that 54% of the Latvian residents had travelled for recreational purposes (to their relatives, for recreation in open air, etc), crossing the border of a city/town or the administrative district. The number of trips in the 3rd quarter of 2007 comprised 5129.5 thsd, of which 3889.5 thsd were same-day trips (without staying overnight), 1118.7 thsd-short trips (1-3 visitor nights) and 121.3 thsd long trips (4 and more visitor nights).

43% of the total population had made same-day trips spending on average 14.2 lats per day. Short recreational trips were preferred by 21% of the total population spending on average 19.7 lats per day. Long recreational trips around Latvia were preferred by 3% of the total population spending on average 37.3 lats per day. Women constituted the majority of the recreational travellers (54%). The most typical age of the travellers was from 25 to 44 years.

The majority of residents travelling for recreational purposes were accommodated in private lodgings (83%). Most often the travellers used a car during their recreational trip (68%).

The most popular destinations of travellers in Latvia were Riga, Jurmala and the district of Riga. Riga was the destination for 20.3% of all recreational trips but same-day trips (without staying overnight) constituted 24.1%. 8.5% of all the short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) were made to Riga, which was also the most popular destination (5.7%) for all long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights).

The average length of recreational trips was 2.4 visitor nights. For the long trips the average length was 8.5 visitor nights.

1.4% of the residents aged 15-74 years have made overnight business trips within the borders of Latvia spending on average 28.7 lats per trip. Women constituted the majority of such travellers (52.5%). The most typical age of residents going on business trips was 25-44 years.
