On the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the country in 2008

The results of a survey of the Latvian population conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that in 2008 the number of recreational trips was 14.4 mln which is less by 10% compared to 2007. Of all recreational trips 11.1 mln were same-day trips (without staying overnight) and 3.3 mln were long trips with staying overnight. The number of business trips in 2008 comprised 0.3 mln which is less by 18% compared to 2007.

Reasons which prevented Latvian population from trips were financial conditions (41%), lack of time (19%), lack of interest (16%).

The most popular destinations of travellers in Latvia were Riga, Riga district  and Jurmala where travellers preferred same-day trips. Riga was the destination of 23% of all recreational trips. Same-day recreational trips to Latvian capital comprised 27% of all same-day recreational trips and 11% of all long recreational trips.

The average length of recreational trips with staying overnight was 2.3 visitor nights, of which – for the long trips with 4 and more nights the average length was 8.1 visitor nights. The average length of business trips with staying overnight was 2.5 visitor nights.

In same-day recreational trips one traveller on average spent 15.5 lats, but during long recreational trips average expenses of one traveller reached 22.0 lats. Usually residents were accommodated in private lodgings when they made long recreational trips (90%). Recreational trips were mostly preferred by women (53%). The majority of travellers (40%) were aged 25-44 years.

During business trip with staying overnight one traveller on average spent 43.2 lats. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 75%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.
