On the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the country in the 2nd quarter of 2009

The survey on the domestic trips of Latvian population conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau* show that in the 2nd quarter of 2009 there were 1001.1 thsd recreational trips with overnight stays which is 14% more than in the 2nd quarter of 2008. Latvian population used recreational options in Latvia more actively because the number of overnight trips abroad has decreased by 16%.

Most often destinations of the travellers who stayed overnight were Riga district, Jurmala and Riga. 11.7% of the total number of recreational trips with overnight stays were made to Riga district, 7.3% - to Jurmala and 6.5% - to Riga.

The average length of recreational trips with staying overnight was 2.5 visitor nights, of which the average length of the long trips (4 and more nights) was 8.6 visitor nights.

17% of population preferred recreational trips with overnight stays, and during single trip one traveller on average spent 21.5 lats, and it is 1.1 lat less than in the 2nd quarter of 2008.

The majority of residents travelling for recreational purposes and staying overnight were accommodated in private lodgings (at relatives and friends, in summer cottages, in rented houses and flats, etc.). Recreational trips were mostly preferred by women (55.6%). The majority of travellers (40.3%) were aged 25-44 years.

In its turn, 19.2 thsd residents made business trips with overnight stays in Latvia. During business trip one traveller on average spent 56.5 lats. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 69.2%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.

*In accordance with the requirements of European Parliament and Council Directive 95/57/EC of December 19, 2001 Central Statistical Bureau carried out a survey on domestictrips. Starting with 2009 due to the changes in methodology recreational trips with overnight stays made within own administrative territory and outside it are counted (prior only those made outside of the administrative territory were counted).
