Recreational and business trips of Latvian residents

In 2016, as compared to 2015, the number of domestic overnight trips of Latvian residents grew by 3.3 % and the number of trips abroad increased by 0.7 %.

In 2016, Latvian residents went on 3.1 million overnight tourism trips around Latvia with at least one night spent at rented or private accommodation, which is 3.3 % more than in 2015. The trips were mostly made for visiting relatives and friends (57.1 %) and for recreation (39.1 %).

Latvian residents spent 7.2 million nights on domestic overnight trips, which is 10.6 % more than in 2015. Most of the nights or 83.8 % were spent at private accommodation (with relatives and friends, at summer cottages and other non-rented accommodation). As compared to the year before, the average duration of trips increased by 0.2 days, reaching 2.4 days.

In 2016, Latvian residents went on 1.2 million overnight trips abroad, which is 0.7 % more than a year before. Most often or in 60.5 % of cases the purpose of the trips was recreation, while in 21.1 % of cases – visiting relatives and friends. Latvian residents went on most of their overnight trips to Lithuania (17.0 %), Estonia (16.8 %), Russia (9.8 %), Germany (6.7 %), Italy (5.8 %), Sweden (5.2 %), United Kingdom (4.1 %), Poland (3.7 %) and Belarus (3.1 %).

Last year, Latvian residents spent 7.4 million nights abroad (44.6 % of the time at the homes of relatives and friends, and 38.4 % of the time at hotels), which is 10.5 % more than in 2015. The average duration of a trip was 5.9 days, increasing by 0.5 days in comparison to the previous year. During the previous year, Latvian residents who had the longest trips abroad on average were those aged 65 and above – 7.8 days.
