On changes of wages and salaries in 3rd quarter of 2011
According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the average monthly gross wages and salaries in the country comprised LVL 467, and it is LVL 19 or 4.3% more, if compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010.
During this time period the wages and salaries in public sector grew by 3.7% (from LVL 475 to LVL 493), of which in general government sector by 3.6% (from LVL 438 to LVL 454), but in private sector the rise comprised 5.0% (from LVL 430 to LVL 452).

If compared to the 2nd quarter, the average monthly gross wages and salaries in the 3rd quarter of this year increased by LVL 3 or 0.6%. In private sector the growth constituted 1.9% (from LVL 443 to LVL 452), but in public sector wages and salaries diminished by 1.0% (from LVL 497 to LVL 493).
The calculated fund of wages and salaries in the country as a whole during a year has risen more rapidly then the number of employees. Number of employees, recalculated at full time units used for the calculation of average monthly wages and salaries, in the 3rd quarter of this year, if compared to the 3rd quarter of previous year, increased by 4.3% or 28.1 thousand persons, but fund of wages and salaries - by 8.8% or LVL 76.3 million.
In comparison with the 2nd quarter, the number of employees grew by 2.3% or 15.2 thousand persons, but the fund of wages and salaries – by 3.0% or LVL 27.2 million.

If compared to the corresponding time period of the previous year, the rise of wages and salaries in the 3rd quarter of 2011 was recorded in all sectors of national economy. The most rapid increase of the average monthly gross wages and salaries was observed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (by 9.2%), in other service activities (this section includes activities of public and other organisations; repair of computers and personal and household goods; washing and (dry-)cleaning; hairdressing and other beauty treatment; funeral and related activities) ( by 8.1%), in real estate activities (by 8.0%), in construction (by 6.8%), and in wholesale and retail trade (by 6.4%).
The lowest growth was recorded in education, as well as in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (by 0.2%, respectively), in mining and quarrying (by 0.5%), and in transport and storage sector (by 0.8%).
In comparison with the 2nd quarter of this year, the most notable increase was observed in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (by 10.3%). It may be explained with the payment of bonuses to the employees of this sector.

Comparison of the wage and salary changes in the Baltic States during a year shows that the highest rise of wages and salaries was recorded in Estonia (of 6.6%) (from EUR 759 to EUR 809), but in Latvia the growth comprised 3.4% (from EUR 637 to EUR 664), and in Lithuania - 1.6% (from EUR 603 to EUR 613).

Explanations
Public sector is central and local government institutions and commercial companies, commercial companies with central or local government capital participation 50% and over, as well as foundations, associations and funds, and their commercial companies. The information does not include the data on foundations, associations and funds and their commercial companies.
According to the European System of Accounts (ESA 95) the general government sector includes central and local government institutions, the social security fund, enterprises controlled and financed by the central and local governments.
The changes of average monthly wages and salaries in percent are calculated as rounded values, i.e., considering the value in santims.
* Data are revised: The indicators of the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2011 were recalculated taking into account the latest information received from microenterprises (microenterprise tax payers) in private sector, as well as revising the calculated sum of the leave payments in education section of the public sector in breakdown by months.
