Number of pension, state social benefit and allowance recipients, pension and benefit amounts
Data on number of pension, social benefit and allowance recipients are used to estimate the number of pension recipients by age, average pension amount and to assess number of social benefit and allowance recipients by age and amount of benefit paid.

Pensions
State pensions are divided into several categories: old-age pensions; disability pensions; survivor’s pensions; service pensions; pensions under special regulations.
Old-age pension
Persons, who have reached the retirement age determined by the law and whose insurance period is not shorter than 15 years, are entitled to receive old age pension.
Disability pension
Persons, who have not reached the retirement age determined by the law, whose disability has been established, and whose insurance period is not shorter than three years and reside in Latvia, are entitled to receive disability pension. Disability pension is paid until the person reaches the retirement age.
Survivor’s pension
Provided the breadwinner has been insured, his or her children and other dependent family members considered incapable of work are entitled to receive survivor’s pension.
Service pension
Persons having an occupation, in which after a certain period of time further work is connected with the loss of professional skills or social danger, are entitled to receive service pension.
Pensions under special regulations
All Chernobyl NPP accident workers and their family members are entitled to receive pensions under special regulations.
Starting from 2008 pensions under special regulations are included into disability pensions and survivor's pensions.
Social insurance
A set of measures organised by the State in order to insure the risk of a person or dependants thereof against the loss of employment income due to illness, disability, maternity, unemployment, old age, an accident at work or occupational disease, , nursing of a child of the socially insured person, as well as additional expenditures related with the death of the socially insured person or dependants thereof.
Social insurance is a part of the state social security system.

Survey method and data source
Data sources used to acquire the information are annual, semi-annual and quarterly surveys conducted by the State Social Insurance Agency of the Ministry of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia: "Survey on the number of State pensions and beneficiaries of State social benefits, average value of pensions, benefits granted, paid, total amount of expenditures in coverage period".
From the report are published data on the number at pension and State social maintenance benefit recipients, pension recipients by age and kind of pension, average value of paid pensions and number of recipients, state social benefits and their average value as well as on expenditure on State benefits and pensions.
