In the second quarter marriages were registered less by 38 % than a year ago
Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in the first six months of this year 3 579 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 1 151 marriage or 24 % less than in the first half of 2019. Drop in the number of marriages registered was affected by the implementation of emergency situation in Latvia as of 13 March due to Covid-19 pandemic. In March, April and May of this year the number of marriages fell, but in June, as compared to May, their number rose – 888 marriages were registered – 423 marriages more than in May, but 511 marriages or 1.6 times less than in June last year. In the second quarter of 2020, 1 835 marriages were registered in total – 1 141 marriage or 38 % less than in the respective period of 2019.
In the first half of this year, 8.9 thousand live births were registered, and that is the same number as in the first six months of 2019. 14.1 thousand deaths were registered in the first half year, which is almost 300 deaths less than in January–June last year.

In June 2020, number of registered births (1 525) was 5.6 % more than in the respective month of the previous year. Number of deaths in June comprised 2 378 and that is 1.2 times more than in June a year ago.
In June of this year there were 786 deaths more than births.
In June, 888 marriages were registered, which is 511 marriage less than in the respective month of the previous year.
On 1 July 2020, provisional population of Latvia accounted for 1 million 901 thousand.
