Population change and demographic balance by month

During the last ten years, the largest number of persons died in January, the smallest – in the warmest months of the year, but the largest number of persons were born in summer – mainly in July, the smallest – in February and November.

The largest number of marriages during the last ten years were concluded in summer – in August and July, but the smallest – at the beginning of the year – January, February and March.

Births, deaths and natural increase

Births

The data on registered number of live births occurred during the corresponding month in the database short-term statistical data section are published in the last reference year. It means that statistics on the number of births includes part of the births occurred during the previous month, but not all births occurred during the respective month are included in the statistics, as in line with the Law On Registration of Civil Status Documents a child shall be registered within a month after the birth thereof. In June of the following year, the data on all live births occurred during the previous year are compiled and published based on the actual month of the birth. Starting from 2000, the number of births includes also children born to mother (usually resident of Latvia) while temporarily abroad. In line with Eurostat methodology, such children shall be included in the number of children born in Latvia.

Deaths

The data on registered number of deaths occurred during the corresponding month in the database short-term statistical data section are published in the last reference year. It means that statistics on the number of deaths includes part of the deaths occurred during the previous month, but not all deaths occurred during the respective month are included in the statistics, as in line with the Law On Registration of Civil Status Documents the death shall be registered within a six working days after it took place. In June of the following year, the data on all deaths occurred during the previous year are compiled and published based on the actual month of the death.
