Press Release

The number of deaths in December was 27 % higher than a year ago

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in December 2020, 3 178 people died in Latvia, which is 673 deaths or 26.9 % more than in December 2019. The death of a person must be registered within six days, but on weekends and public holidays registration does not take place; therefore, when collecting data by actual date of death, the number of deaths at the end of December 2020 is expected to be higher.

In the last months of 2020 the number of deaths increased rapidly: in October by 6.4 % more than in September, in November - by 9.0 % more than in October, and in December - by 26.1 % more than in November.

According to preliminary data, the number of deaths in 2020 was by 937 persons more or 3.4 % higher than in 2019.

Provisional indicators of the year 2020, which include data on deaths in breakdown by month, and final data of the year 2019, where monthly data are summarized based on the date of the actual event were used in comparison of data with the corresponding period last year.

In order to obtain more accurate statistics on births and deaths in breakdown by month, according to the date of the event, in 2021 the CSB will publish monthly data on the Official Statistics Portal (OSP) approximately 45 days after the month of the event, i.e. on the 11th-15th day of the second following month. Statistics on demographics in January will be published on 15 March.
