The number of deaths in December was 27 % higher than a year ago
Data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that in December 2020, 3 178 people died in Latvia, which is 673 deaths or 26.9 % more than in December 2019.
The number of births continues to decline
In 11 months of 2020, the number of births continues to decrease - 16.2 thousand births were registered in Latvia, which is 6.0 % less than in January – November 2019 (17.2 thousand).
The number of deaths in November was 16 % higher than a year ago
In November of this year, 2 520 people died in Latvia, which is 346 deaths or 15.9 % more than in November 2019.

COD data refer to the underlying cause which - according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) - is "the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury".
