Results of External Migration Survey
In 2017 and 2018, Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) conducted External Migration Survey aiming to acquire additional information on migration flows and specify population estimate. A decision on organisation of the survey was made as annual migration estimate comparisons with the results acquired in other CSB individual and household surveys as well as Microcensus conducted in 2015 showed that every year country population estimate may include approximately 2 % of emigrants. It is especially difficult to estimate the number of young people aged 19–24 as they often change place of residence both in Latvia and abroad and do not register this fact.
External Migration Survey was conducted in 20 thousand households by surveying respondents twice – at the end of 2017 and 2018 (aiming to find out information about 2016, 2017 and 2018). Each survey wave allowed to acquire information from more than 35 thousand households, 7 % of which filled in electronic questionnaires on-line.
Migration (immigration and emigration) statistics covers December of 2017 and nine (ten in total) months of 2018. Information on languages (mother tongue, language mainly spoken at home and foreign language skills) refer to 2017, while data on educational attainment level (incl. abroad) refer to 2018.
