Immigration, emmigration and net migration

Since 1990, in the result of migration, the number of population of Latvia has reduced by almost half a million (457 thousand). In the result of international long-term migration the number of population in 2010-2017 dropped by 121.2 thousand.

In 2017, 9.9 thousand persons arrived in Latvia for permanent stay (period of time equal to one year or more) (18.8 % more than in 2016), while 17.7 thousand persons left – 13.8 % less than in previous year.

A large number (14.7 thousand or 83 % of emigrants) of population of Latvia in working age (15-62 years) went abroad. 9.5 thousand of them or 64 % were 20-39 years old. Of the total number of immigrants 80 % were of working age. Also 62 % of migrants of working age were 20-39 years old.

In 2017, 49 % of immigrants were from the EU countries. Significant part (34 %) was also made up by immigrants from CIS countries. In 2017, 81 % of emigrants went to the European Union countries.
