Terms and definitions

Kind of economic activity [energy]

Sphere of activity of the enterprise or individual that expresses itself in the produced goods or services.

The type is determined by Standard Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1, starting from 2008 – NACE Rev. 2).

In 2008 the data were published according to both NACE Rev. 1.1 and NACE Rev. 2.

Hard coal

These are coals, with the gross calorific value higher than 23 865 kJ/kg used as the fuel for heating.

This category includes anthracite, coke coal and other bitumen coal.

Coke

Coke is solid product obtained in the carbonization of coal, usually coking coal, at high temperature.

It is low in moisture and volatile matter. Used mainly in the iron and steel industry.

Peat briquettes

Peat briquettes obtained in peat compression process and are used as fuel.

Peat

This category includes only fuel peat, which is used as the fuel for the heating, or for peat briquettes.

Peat used for other purposes which are not production of the energy, for e.g., for the agriculture, is not indicated.

Production [solid fuels]

Quantity of solid fuels produced from natural raw materials. This category includes peat, peat briquettes.

Exports of solid fuels
Quantity of solid fuels transported across the state border to the third countries and to the EU Member States (without the commodity flows to customs warehouses and free economic zones), excluding transit.
Imports of solid fuels
Quantity of solid fuels transported across the state border from the third countries and from the European Union (EU) Member States (without the commodity flows from customs warehouses and free economic zones), excluding transit.
Losses of solid fuels
Losses emerging during transportation and supply, storing or recycling.
Stock changes
Difference between the opening stock level (on the first day of the year) and closing stock level (on the last day of the year). Stock build is shown as a negative number and a stock draw is shown as a positive number.
Total consumption of solid fuels
Consumption of solid fuels by transformation sector, energy sector, by all sectors of national economy, as well as by households.
Final consumption of solid fuels
Consumption of solid fuels by industry, transport, households, agriculture, forestry, hunting, fishery and other consumers.

Data collection and statistical processing

Survey method and data source

Monthly data are surveyed and compiled in compliance with the methodology "Monthly questionnaire Solid Fuel" and "Energy Statistics Manual" of the Eurostat. Annual data are collected and compiled in accordance with Eurostat methodology "Coal Annual Questionnaire" and "Energy Statistics Manual".

Data on production, imports, exports and consumption of solid fuels are acquired from:

  • Monthly data
    • INTRASTAT monthly survey of enterprises engaged in trade with EU Member States;
    • Customs declarations on trade with third countries;
    • Monthly survey 2-solid fuels "Report on imports, production and realization of solid fuels".

  • Annual data
    • INTRASTAT monthly survey of enterprises engaged in trade with EU Member States;
    • Customs declarations on trade with third countries;
    • Monthly survey 2-solid fuels "Report on imports, production and realization of solid fuels";
    • Annual survey 2-EK "Report on purchase and use of energy resources";
    • Annual survey 1-energy "Report on production of heat and electricity".

Target population

Target population of the monthly data covers all economically active enterprises engaged in production, import, export and sale of energy resources.

Target population of the annual data covers all economically active merchants, budgetary institutions, foundations, associations and funds engaged in production, import, export, consumption and sale of energy resources.

Sample size

Monthly data are acquired with the help of INTRASTAT sample survey – full-scope survey on trade with the third countries. Monthly reports "2-solid fuels" are collected from all enterprises producing peat and companies engaged in import of hard coal and imports of coal in which annually reaches at least 500 tons.

For the annual data annually approximately 6 thousand respondents are surveyed. Consumption of fuel in sectors of the national economy is found out by surveying State and local government enterprises of all sectors regardless the number of persons employed and by surveying other enterprises employing 80 and more persons. Data on enterprises and organisations employing less than 80 persons are acquired with the help of random sampling and afterwards obtained results are extrapolated.

Calculation methods

The consumption is calculated: production + imports - exports + stock changes.

Classifications

Data are compiled and calculated in compliance with:

  • EU Combined Nomenclature;
  • Statistical Classification of Economic Activities NACE Rev. 2.
