Confidence indicators in manufacturing

The Business Survey in manufacturing is conducted by the CSB in accordance with the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, using funding of the European Commission.

Business tendency indicators in manufacturing present production activity changes in recent past and in the closest future and cover such aspects as the total level of orders and the level of export orders, the expected employment and product sales prices in the following months. The acquired data serve as the basis for economic analysis and short-term forecast. The main advantage of the Business Tendency Survey is the simplicity of the method for obtaining results and the timeliness, as well as continuous harmonisation within the framework of the European Union.

Survey method and source Data

Data are acquired by means of sample survey. Information is obtained from statistical report form "Business Tendency Evaluation in Industry" (1-RKJ).

Statistical population

Economically active enterprises in industry, main kind of economic activity according to Statistical Classification of Economic Activities NACE Rev. 2 is manufacturing.

Sample size

Enterprises are selected for the surveys using targeted stratified sample.

Enterprises are stratified accordingly kind of activity by NACE Rev. 2 and the number of employed. The larger the number of employed in the enterprise, the larger the possibility for this enterprise to be included in the sample.

The sample is created as sample independent of other enterprise sample surveys.

In 2020 sample includes 834 enterprises.

Calculation method

To obtain results on confidence indicators in manufacturing in the country in total, data provided by enterprises are weighted with the number of employees in the enterprise, as well as share of enterprise's sector in manufacturing in total is taken into account. Calculating total confidence indicators in manufacturing by enterprise size groups,  share of enterprise's sector in manufacturing in total is not taken into account.

On each question of the survey breakdown of answers by variants is obtained which is expressed in per cent. From this breakdown net (balance) is calculated as difference among shares of the final answers.  For the question with three variants of answers net (N) of answers is calculated according the following formula:

S = ( "+" ) – ( "–" ), where

("+") – share of positive answers ("increased", "above regular") as per cent;

("–") – share of negative answers ("decreased", "below regular") as per cent.

Using net gives opportunity to express answers of the question in one number, changes in answers to this question by periods form simple dynamics row.
