On number of stores and catering in 2006

At the end of 2006 in Latvia were more than 17 thousand stores, what is for 59% more than in 1995. In 2006 there were 75 stores on every 10000 people (in 1995 - 44). Moreover, last year in market and street trade places were working 6,3 thousand stalls and kiosks, according to Central Statistical Bureau data.

In comparison with food and non-food store development, can be observed tendency of decrease in the number of food and general1) stores. In 2006 this number decreased to 5024 stores, comprising 29.4% of the store total number. This tendency can be explained with the fast supermarket entrance in the Latvia economics.

In the dynamics of non-food commodity group, in turn, can be observed the contrary tendency. If in 1995 these stores comprised almost 28% of the store total number, than in 2006 non-food commodities were sold in more than 70% of the stores.

Increased also the number of stores with big trade area. Stores with trade area under 50 m2 in 1999 comprised almost 54% of the total. In 2006, in turn, this indicator comprised only 43%. But the number of stores with trade area more than 400 m2 in relevant period increased more than three times – from 313 to 1026.

Still there are many stores with less than 5 employees. In 1995 such number of employees had 77% of the store total number. Within 11 years this indicator practically did not change, but the number of big stores (with 100 employees and more) in this period increased from 9 stores in 1995 to 52 stores in 2006.
