Manufacturing production output decreased by 1.5 % in August

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that compared to August 2019, in August 2020, manufacturing production output1 according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices decreased by 1.5 %.

Production output decreased in electricity and gas supply - by 11,7 %, but in mining and quarrying there was an increase by 1.8 %. Total industrial production output decreased by 3 %.

In August, the industrial production output decrease was influenced by vacation time for business partners and employees (in July and August this year), when the production process was temporarily stopped in the factories, and its resumption was slower than a year ago. The largest decline in production output which, according to the companies, was due to vacation time in sectors such as in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers - by 27.4 %, in the manufacture of textiles - by 12.2 %, in the manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment - by 8.2 % and in the manufacture of wearing apparel - by 3.3 % There was a significant production output decline in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. In the above-mentioned sectors, the sales volume of manufactured products in foreign markets decreased significantly in August this year. Production output also decreased in repair and installation of machinery and equipment, and food production (by 18.1 % and 0.8 %, respectively).

Conversely, there was an increase in production output in the sector having the largest share in industrial production - manufacture of wood, and of products of wood and cork - by 6.9 %, as well as in printing and reproduction of recorded media - by 7.6 % and in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products.

Compared to July 2020, in August 2020, manufacturing production output according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices decreased by 2.7 %. Production output also decreased in mining and quarrying - by 4.3 %, but increased in electricity and gas supply - by 8.4 %. Total industrial production output decreased by 0.4 %.

Methodological explanations

1 Industrial production is calculated by summing the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided in a given month with the changes in stocks of finished products and work in progress. The industrial production volume index (IPI) describes changes in the volume of industrial production during the reference period in comparison to the base period. IPI is estimated by recalculating the production output indicator at constant prices with the help of producer price indices.

2Industrial turnover is the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided in a given month. The industrial turnover index measures the monthly development of market demand for industrial goods and services. It is calculated at current prices without excluding price influence. Unlike industrial goods that also include unfinished goods and goods in stock, turnover only includes the goods sold and industrial services provided.
