Building permits granted in 2007
The number of granted building permits trends to decrease, according to the data of the Central statistical Bureau. In 2007 5341 building permits were granted for the construction of single dwelling houses with a total area of 1171.1 thsd m2. But in the 2006 5868 permits for a total area of 1296.5thsd m2 were granted. The number of building permits granted for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses has also decreased. In 2007 only 1073 such building permits were granted, 22% less if compared to 2006. We would like to remind that, building permits are granted for the new construction, as well as, for the capital repairs, reconstruction and restoration of the buildings.
4009 building permits or 75% of the total number of building permits granted were granted for the construction of single dwelling houses. In 2006 the number of permits for the construction of new single dwelling buildings represented 78% of the total number of permits granted for the construction of this kind of buildings.
The majority of building permits for the construction of single dwelling buildings in 2007 were issued in the district of Riga, in total 1581 building permit making up 39% of the total number of such permits in the country. 353 building permits (9%) were granted in the district of Ogre, 263 (7%) in the city of Riga, 212 (5%) in the district of Jelgava, 203 (5%) in Jelgava, 134 (3%) in the district of Bauska, 131 (3%) in the district of Tukums and 119 (5%) in the city of Jūrmala.
Of the total number of building permits issued for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses (1073 permits), 491 or 46% were granted for the construction of new summerhouses and weekend houses with a total area of 58.4 thsd m2. The majority of this type of houses is intended to be built in the district of Riga – 309 houses or 63% of the total number of summerhouses and weekend houses followed by the district of Ogre with 45 houses (9%) and the district of Jelgava (22 houses or 4%).
In 2007 536 building permits were granted for the construction of two and more dwelling houses with a total area of 1263.1 thsd m2. Of the total 536 building permits issued, 462 permits for a total area of 1137.0 thsd m2 were granted for the construction of new two or more dwelling buildings. These permits were granted in the cities of Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jūŗmala, Liepāja, and Rēzekne and in the districts of Bauska, Jelgava, Krāslava, Kuldīga, Limbaži, Ogre, Preiļi, Rīga, Talsi, Tukums, and Valmiera.
In 2007 building permits were granted for the construction of 67 new hotels and other similar short-term accommodation buildings with a total area of 29.3 thsd m2, 65permits were issued for the construction of new office buildings, 93 permits for new wholesale and retail trade buildings and 46 for new traffic and communications buildings. Building permits were also granted for the construction of new production buildings and warehouses (194 building permits), as well as 54 permits for the erection of new mass entertainment, education or health care buildings.

Building permits were granted also for the civil engineering constructions. 259 building permits were granted for the construction of new highways, streets and roads, 2 building permits – for the construction of railway tracks, as well as, 194 permits for the construction of new main pipelines, communications and power transmission lines with a total length of 269.2 km. In 2007 1428 building permits were granted for the construction of new local pipelines and cables with a total length of 726.9 km.
