Fishery statistics characterize catch of different fish in various fishing grounds (in thousand tons), water consumption in the production of aquaculture products, sale of aquaculture products, fish farming, as well as covers economic indicators of aquaculture activities.
Concepts and definitions
Rearing or cultivation of aquatic organisms using techniques designed to increase the production of the organisms in question beyond the natural capacity of the environment; the organisms remaining the property of a natural or legal person throughout the rearing or culture stage, up to and including harvesting.
Farming of fish and juvenile crustaceans for the restoration of natural water resources
Juveniles released into the wild with the aim restocking of rivers, lakes and other waters other than for aquaculture purposes. These releases may then be available for capture by fishing operations.
Hatcheries and nurseries
Places for the artificial breeding, hatching and rearing through the early life stages of aquatic animals.
Survey method and data source
Fishery data are acquired with the help of calculations based on following data sources:
- CSB statistical report forms:
- annual – 1-aquaculture "Survey on aquaculture";
- quarterly – 1-fishery "Survey on fishery";
- data of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia, Fishery Department;
- data of the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment.
