Sown area, harvested production and average yield of agricultural crops
Data on areas, harvested production and average yield of agricultural crops are used to acquire information on crop production sector during the corresponding time period.
Data are collected in compliance with the requirements of European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 543/2009.
Concepts and definitions
Harvested crop production
It is production harvested from basic, repeated and inter-row sown areas.
Data on grain are given in barn weight, i.e., the weight after the first treatment deducting the unusable waste and loss through drying till the stated standard humidity.
Sown area of agricultural crops
Harvested areas of agricultural crops
Part of the sown area from which production is harvested. It may be equal or smaller than sown area.
Average yield of agricultural crops
Average yield of agricultural crops is calculated on the basis of the harvested crop production in basic sown areas per 1 ha of spring productive area of corresponding crop, except hay from sown grasslands and natural meadows; the indicator for the latter is calculated from the actually harvested areas.
Technically and economically independent unit having common management producing agricultural products or preserving good agricultural and environmental conditions in the soil.
Holdings may produce also non-agricultural products and provide non-agricultural services.
Data collection and statistical processing
Survey method and data source
Data on sown areas, harvested production and average yield of agricultural crops are obtained via sample survey using CSB questionnaire 2-LS "Crop production".
As of 2018, CSB publishes estimate on sown areas and harvested yield of principal agricultural crops during the reference year; the estimate is revised each month over the period from May to November. The estimates are based on the evaluation of the Ministry of Agriculture and CSB experts using information of the Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre SIA and Rural Support Service.
Economically active agricultural holdings.
Sample has been formed as stratified simple random sampling. Holdings are stratified by their location (NUTS 3), type of farming and economic size.
Extrapolation of the data on the surveyed holdings to all agricultural holdings is based on the number of similar holdings represented by sampled holdings as well as actual response rate in each of the survey territories.
Data are collected in compliance with:
- Classification of the Administrative Territories and Territorial Units of the Republic of Latvia (CATTU);
- Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS).
