Number of livestock

In 2016, 24.1 thousand agricultural holdings were breeding 434.7 thousand cattle heads, of which 18.4 thousand holdings kept 160.7 thousand dairy cows. Compared to 2013, the number of cattle decreased by 21.8 thousand or 5.3 %, number of dairy cows by 5.9 thousand or 3.5 %. Out of all holdings, 11.5 thousand holdings kept 361.1 thousand pigs, which is a decrease of 3.7 thousand or 1.0 %, as compared to 2013.

In 2016, one holding engaged in livestock breeding had 18 cattle, of which 9 dairy cows. One Latvian farm on average had 31 pigs, which is 2 pigs or 9.4 % more than in 2013. Average sheep number per holding rose by 41.0 % – from 25 sheep in 2013 to 35 sheep in 2016.
