Labour force in agriculture

Results of the Farm Structure Survey 2016 show that during the reference period totally 162.6 thousand persons were regularly employed in agriculture, and women accounted for 47.0 % of them. Compared to 2010, in 2016 regular labour force in agriculture dropped by 18.4 thousand or 10.1 %. Out of the total labour force in agriculture, 49.4 thousand persons were employed on nonregular basis, which is 9.5 % fewer than in 2010 and 8.1 % fewer than in 2013.

The number of employees working full time comprised 25.6 thousand or 15.8 % of the total labour force in agriculture. The greatest number of regular employees was recorded in Latgale region (52.8 thousand persons or 32.5 % of the total regular employees in the country), followed by Vidzeme region (32 thousand or 19.7 %), and Zemgale region (30.2 thousand employees or 18.6 %). Labour force in agriculture at annual work units (including non-regular labour force) comprised 76.9 thousand persons, which is 6.4 % less than in 2013. Holders accounted for 81.8 % of the total number of regularly employed (at annual work units).
