CSB starts publishing remigration statistics
In 2017 and 2018, additionally to annual migration estimate, Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia conducted External Migration Survey. The survey was aimed at finding out coverage of population migration flows abroad and acquisition of more detailed information about remigrants.
In May the level of producer prices in industry decreased by 0.6 %
Compared to April, in May 2019 the level of producer prices in Latvian industry fell by 0.6 %.
Energy consumption upturn in both production and consumption
In 2018 gross energy consumption in Latvia comprised 202.3 petajoules, which is 5.9 % more than in 2017.
Amendments to the law On State Pensions have affected marriage statistics
Regardless the fact that in 2018, compared to 2017, the total number of marriages fell by 0.7 %, the number of marriages concluded by elderly population grew 1.7 times. The rise was facilitated by the amendments made to the law On State Pensions.
In April foreign trade turnover of Latvia was 9.5 % larger than a year ago
In April 2019 the foreign trade turnover of Latvia amounted to EUR 2.4 billion, which at current prices was 9.5 % larger than a year ago, of which the exports value of goods was 2.9 % and imports value of goods 15.3 % higher.
During the year, the average level of consumer prices increased by 3.3 %
In May 2019, compared to May 2018, the average level of consumer prices* rose by 3.3 %. Prices of goods increased by 3.4 % and prices of services – by 3.1 %.
In 2018 Latvian residents spent EUR 564 million on trips abroad
In 2018 Latvian residents went on 2.2 million trips abroad, which is 5.8 % more than a year ago, and spent EUR 563.8 million, 0.3 % less.
Increase in population number recorded only in Pierīga
In 2018 population number rose only in Pierīga – by 3.3 thousand or 0.9 %. Whereas the largest share of reduction in population number was recorded in Latgale region – 4.6 thousand or 1.7 %, in Vidzeme – 2.4 thousand (1.3 %), in Kurzeme – 2.9 thousand (1.2 %), in Zemgale – 2.4 thousand (1.0 %). Population number in Riga fell by 5.4 thousand or 0.8 %.
In 2018, Latvian residents spent EUR 334 million on domestic trips
In 2018, as compared to 2017, the number of domestic trips of Latvian residents comprised 10,9 million and they spent EUR 333.9 million, EUR 31.2 million or 8.5 % less.
In the 1st quarter, freight transport at ports increased, by rail and road – decreased
Compared to the 1st quarter of 2018, in the 1st quarter of 2019 the freight turnover at ports increased by 1.6 million tonnes or 10.4 %.
Manufacturing output growth in April
Compared to April 2018, in April 2019 industrial production output fell by 2.4 % (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices).
Each fourth employed person in Latvia is at retirement or pre-retirement age
Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau and published in the publication “Labour Force Survey: Key Indicators in 2018” show that over the past ten years the average age of employed people has risen by 2.4 years, constituting 43.7 years in 2018.
GDP has grown by 3.0 % in the 1st quarter
In the 1st quarter of 2019, compared to the 1st quarter of 2018, the gross domestic product (seasonally and calendar non-adjusted data) increased by 3.0 %.
In April, retail trade turnover grew by 7 %
Compared to April 2018, in April 2019 total retail trade turnover rose by 7.0 %.
In April, construction costs increased by 0.2 %
Compared to March, in April 2019 the level of construction costs in Latvia grew by 0.2 %
Informal negotiations on Sustainable Development Goals
On 24 May 2019, experts of various fields of the Central Statistical Bureau participated in "Figures for Breakfast" organized by the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation to talk about indicators of next period of the National Development Plan in context of Sustainable Development Goals with representatives from NGO administration, local governments, private and academic sectors and educational institutions.
Lower birth and migration rates recorded in Latvia
At the beginning of 2019 population of Latvia accounted for 1 million 920 thousand people, which is 14.4 thousand people fewer than a year ago.
Slower increase in earnings recorded at the beginning of the year
At the beginning of 2019 earnings in the country were growing slower than a year before. In the 1st quarter of 2019, compared to the 1st quarter of 2018, the average monthly gross wages and salaries grew by 7.8 % or EUR 75, reaching EUR 1 036 for full-time work.
Share of population feeling lonely and socially excluded increases with age
In 2018 shows that 17 % of the population aged 75 and over mentioned that during the last month have felt lonely all or most of the time, while such an assessment among younger people (aged 25–34) was given ten times less frequently (by 1.6 %).
