Dwelling [Population census, 2000]

Dwelling (housing unit) – it may be constituted by room or group of rooms with independent entrance or by separate building.

Amenities. A kitchen is defined as a room (or a part of a room) that has been designed and equipped for the preparation of principal meals and is used for that purpose; Bath or shower is one which has fixed connections to both water supply and waste pipe leading outside the building; Bath-house includes Finnish sauna too. Persons were asked to indicate also presence or absence of electricity, gas for cooking, water supply, sewerage, flush toilet, hot water.

Type of dwelling. Persons were asked to indicate one of the following types of dwelling: a family house, separate flat, common flat, room in the hostel, dwelling of other type. Common flat was marked for persons occupying a part of the flat when the other persons or families also lived in the same flat, and each of them had a separate rental agreement. Room in the hostel was marked for persons who were living in an officially registered hostel of an enterprise, educational establishment or local municipality according to the contract between a person and the owner of this hostel, and there was at least one room at their disposal. Dwelling of other type was marked for persons living in the old-aged peoples’ and invalids’ social care centres, children’ homes, orphanages, hostels of the educational establishments (in case persons who are not kindred live together in a room), health care institutions, where the persons are staying for a lasting period of time, as well as in cases when the type of dwelling occupied by a person could not be ascribed to any of the group mentioned in the questionnaire, e.g. a dugout.

Type of heating of dwelling. Persons were asked to indicate one of the following types of heating: central heating, stove, other.

Type of ownership of building. This topic refers to the type of ownership of the dwellings and not that of the land on which the dwelling stands. Persons were asked to indicate one of the following types of ownership of building: owner-occupied dwellings, owned by other private owner, owned by the municipality or company, owned by the co-operative society of owners, other type of ownership.

Room. A room is defined as a space in living quarters enclosed by walls reaching from the floor to the ceiling or roof covering, of a size 4 square meters at least.
