Economic activities the most affected by COVID-19
Based on the information compiled by the State Revenue Service, analysis of the number of employees supported by downtime benefit in breakdown by economic activity of enterprise shows that during the first days since enterprises were able to apply for the downtime benefit 37% of employees for whom the benefit was requested worked in accommodation and food service activities, 12 % in wholesale and retail trade, 10 % in arts, entertainment and recreation, and 7 % in administrative and support service activities (travel agencies, tour operators).
Last year, in Latvia there were 804.5 thousand employees aged 15–74. Out of the number, 124.8 thousand (15.5 %) worked in wholesale and retail trade, 30.6 thousand (3.8 %) in accommodation and food service activities, 26.6 thousand (3.3 %) in administrative and support service activities (which include travel agency, tour operator reservation service and related activities), 25.4 thousand (3.2 %) in professional, scientific and technical activities, and 21 thousand or (2.6 %) in arts, entertainment and recreation.
