Indicators of port and airport activities in the 1st quarter of 2012
Cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the 1st quarter of 2012 comprised 20 million tons, which is 22.6% more than in the 1st quarter of 2011, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau. In March 2012, a new record of monthly cargo turnover was reached – 7.2 million tons.

In the 1st quarter of 2012, the amount of loaded cargo at Latvian ports comprised 17.8 million tons, which is 19.5% more than in January - March 2011. Due to the great demand in the world market, oil products constituted more than one third (38.2%) of the loaded cargo, followed by coal – 33.9%.

In January - March 2012, the volume of cargo unloaded at the ports in Latvia comprised 2.2 million tons, which is 54.5% more as compared to January - March 2011. Owing to the positive traits in the development of the world economy, more than one fifth (21.9%) of the unloaded cargo constituted cargo in containers, followed by oil products (17.1%) and roll on/roll off cargo (15.5%).

As compared to the 1st quarter of 2011, cargo turnover at Riga port in the 1st quarter of 2012 increased by 23.6% and comprised 9.5 million tons. 8.4 million tons of cargo were loaded at the port, which is 21% more than in January - March 2011, whereas 1.1 million tons were unloaded, which is an increase of 47.5%
Cargo turnover at the port of Ventspils in the 1st quarter of 2012 constituted 8.5 million tons, and it is a rise of 19.1%, as compared to the 1st quarter of 2011. The volume of cargo loaded grew by 16.8% and comprised 7.8 million tons, whereas the volume of cargo unloaded increased 1.5 times.
Cargo turnover at the port of Liepaja in the 1st quarter of 2012 was 1.7 mln tons, which is an increase of 42.9% as compared to the 1st quarter of 2011. 1.3 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepaja - an increase of 35.4 % as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of unloaded cargo grew 1.8 times.
Cargo turnover at minor ports in the 1st quarter of 2012 remained at the previous level - 0.3 million tons with a slight increase of 0.3% as compared to January – March 2011.
In the 1st quarter of 2012, 142.9 thousand passengers were carried by ferries at Riga Passenger Port, which is an increase of 4.9 % as compared to January - March 2011. In its turn 3.3 thousand transit passengers at Riga Passenger Port were carried by passenger cruise vessels, which is 20.7% less than in the first quarter of 2011. Passenger turnover at the port of Ventspils comprised 11.1 thousand passengers – 2 times more than in the corresponding period of the previous year, whereas at the port of Liepaja – 7 thousand passengers (1.7 times more).

In the 1st quarter of 2011, passenger turnover at Riga International Airport comprised 949.3 thousand passengers - an increase of 1% as compared to the 1st quarter of 2011.

In the 1st quarter of 2012, the largest passenger turnover at Riga International Airport was with airports in Great Britain – 116.6 thousand passengers (a decrease of 7%), with airports in Germany – 115 thousand passengers (a decrease of 4%) and with airports in Russia – 103.6 thousand passengers (an increase of 34.3%) as compared to the 1st quarter of 2011.
