Meteorological data provide information on main indicators characterising weather conditions in selected cities characterising climate of Latvia more distinctly – mean, maximum and minimum air temperature, annual precipitation, number of days having precipitation, average relative humidity and sunshine hours, as well as on key air quality indicators in Riga, Ventspils, Liepāja and Rēzekne – concentration of ozone, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen in atmosphere.

Definitions

The highest temperature in the entire representative observation period.

The lowest temperature in the entire representative observation period.

Average values for the observation period from 1961 to 1990.

Data collection

Survey method and source data

Meteorological data characterising climate conditions in Latvia in breakdown by selected cities are acquired from the data managed by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Mean air temperature in Latvia is calculated using information from 22 currently working observation stations.

Air quality measurements are taken by means of the automatic DOAS OPSIS stations, which ensure continuous registration of polluting substances in towns.

Data revision

The published data are final and are not revised.

Comparability

Comparability over time

Data on weather conditions in Latvia as a whole and selected cities characterising climate of Latvia more distinctly are available starting from 1997.

Annual and monthly data on air quality are available since 2006.

International comparability

Eurostat

The Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) compiles and publishes on its homepage the information on land use, as well as on air pollution and climate change in countries of European Union. It can be found in the section: Statistics/ Environment and energy/ Environment/ Land use and Greenhouse Gases/Air Pollution:

Other comparability

Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Agency (LEGMA)

Web page of the LEGMA contains publically available data bases on:

  • environmental condition and natural resources, environment load, activities;
  • meteorological and hydrological observations in Latvia;
  • air quality.
