Data on retail trade enterprises are used to obtain the following information: the number of retail trade, catering network and stores in breakdown by trade area, by number of employees and by the kind of activity.

Definitions

Retail trade is the resale of new and used goods (sale without transformation) by stores, kiosks, trading places, markets, stands etc., as well as retail trade by enterprises taking mail-orders, street vendors and peddlers, consumer co-operatives, auction houses, etc., mainly to the general public for personal or household consumption or utilization.

According to Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1) the retail sale of automotive fuel are not included in retail trade.

Retail trade enterprise is an enterprise main activity of which is retail trade.

Stores belonging to or rented by retail trade enterprise where economic activity of enterprise is carried out.

These are particular commercial premises where consumers are shopping.

Trade area is area of premises used for selling and displaying of goods.

Includes: total area available to customers, including fitting-rooms, area of counters and show-windows, area behind the counter used by shop-assistants.

Excludes: office rooms, goods’ storage and preparation rooms, workshops, staircases, cloak rooms and other auxiliary rooms.

Trading stand and/or kiosks belonging to or rented by retail trade enterprise where economic activity of enterprise is carried out.

Usually customers do not go inside those commercial premises in order to do shopping as it is in case of stores.

Data are collected using Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1).

Additional information

Offices organizing distribution of goods to clients who ordered goods via Internet, telephone or post are not surveyed.

After 2008 the annual statistical report forms 2-trade "Survey on trade and catering network" are not collected and data base is not continued.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Data are collected conducting sample survey, and information are collected with the help of CSB annual statistical report form 2-trade "Survey on trade and catering network" and data of Statistical business register.

Every year information on trade and catering network is compiled at the four-digit level of NACE Rev. 1.1.

Target population

All economically active enterprises whose main or auxiliary kind of activity (NACE Rev. 1.1) is retail trade (NACE division 52), sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; retail sale of automotive fuel (NACE division 50), hotels and restaurants (NACE division 55).

Sample size

Enterprises are selected for the survey using simple stratified case sampling. They are stratified by kind of activity and turnover. The larger the enterprise’s turnover, the larger the possibility for the enterprise to be included into the sample. Usually about 20% of total number of enterprises are surveyed.

With mathematical methods data are extrapolated for all country.

Data revision

The data published are final and are not revised, except cases when significant mistakes are found in the enterprise reports.

Comparability over time

Data on retail trade enterprises and catering network are available from 1990 until 2008.

Data on stores by types are available from 1995 until 2008.

Data on stores by trade area are available from 1999 until 2008.

Data on stores by number of employees are available from 1998 until 2008.

Confidentiality of the information provided by respondents is protected by the Section 17 of the Statistics Law stipulating rights and obligations of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia and other state authorities producing official statistics. Read more
