Data on the number of motor vehicles registered are used to determine the number of motor vehicles: number of registered motor vehicles in breakdown by regions and cities under state jurisdiction, make, year of output, type of fuel, number of registered new passenger cars; number of railway transport: locomotives, freight wagons and passenger carriages; number of aircraft, number of ships and number of transport vehicles used in electrified city transport.

A road transport vehicle with an engine that according to its design is intended for moving on the road.

The Latvian Shipping Register includes ships the owners of which are legal persons, citizens and permanent residents of the Republic of Latvia who on the basis of ownership rights own a ship.

The Latvian Shipping Register also records the ownership rights to a ship of non-resident natural and legal persons if they have an authorised representative in Latvia who has undertaken the execution of the requirements related to this ship. 

A vehicle intended for driving on rails in connection with an external electrical power supply source.

This term does not refer to electrical train.

A mechanical vehicle intended for driving on the road in connection with an external electrical power supply source.

The number of ships includes only those ships that are registered in the Latvian Shipping Register with the tonnage of 100 and over gross registered tons.

Survey method and data source

Data are obtained conducting a full scope survey. Data sources are:

  • information from JSC "Road Traffic Safety Directorate";
  • information from Latvian Shipping Register of the Latvian Maritime Administration;
  • data from Latvian Civil Aircraft Register;
  • CSB statistical report form 1-electrified transport "Survey on Electrified transport";
  • CSB statistical report form 1-railway "Survey on Railway transport".

Data revision

The data published are final and are not adjusted.

Data on number of registered vehicles are available since 1990.
