Data on number of livestock are collected and compiled in compliance with the requirements of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008. As a result, data acquired cover information on number of livestock at the end of the year.

Definitions

Technically and economically independent unit having common management producing agricultural products or preserving good agricultural and environmental conditions in the soil.

Holdings may produce also non-agricultural products and provide non-agricultural services.

Covers all kinds of livestock meat in slaughter weight acquired in slaughterhouses and agricultural holdings.

Number of livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, poultry) on agricultural holding at the corresponding date.

Data are collected and published in compliance with:

  • Classification of Administrative Territories and Territorial Units of the Republic of Latvia (CATTU);
  • Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS).

A Classification Catalogue with classification codes and their explanations has been published on the CSB website.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Data source for the number of livestock (till the end of 2007) is sample survey. Since the end of 2008, data source for the number of cattle, sheep, goats and horses is information available in the Agricultural Data Centre Animal Register. Statistical data source for the number of pigs is sample survey based on the CSB questionnaire 3-ls “Livestock” and 21-ls “Report on production and sale of agricultural products”.

Target population

Economically active agricultural holdings.

Sample size

Sample has been formed as stratified simple random sample. Holdings are stratified basing on their location (NUTS3), type of farming and economic size.

Statistical processing

Calculation methods

By extrapolating the data on the surveyed holdings to all private holdings, the fact how many similar holdings are represented by the holdings in the sample was taken into account, as was the actual response rate in each of the survey territories.

Data revision

Data published are final and are not revised.
