Statistical data on number of marriages and divorces provide information on number of marriages in breakdown by month, ethnicity and age of persons marrying, etc., as well as on number of divorces by length of marriage, age of divorced persons etc.

Definitions

Number of divorces against the mean number of population.

It is usually expressed per one calendar year per 1000 people.

Number of marriages against the mean number of population in a definite period of time.

It is usually expressed per one calendar year per 1000 people.

A marriage is regarded as divorced if the court ruling has become legally effective.

Since 1 February 2011 marriage in Latvia may be divorced also by a sworn notary.

Individual status of a person in relation to the family according to the national legislation.

Four standard categories are used: single (unmarried), married, divorced, and widowed.

In vital statistics population is classified by the marital status on the basis of the data of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

The number of marriages includes marriages registered in the General Registry Offices of cities/towns and counties (and of parishes till July 2009) and in the churches of those denominations and congregations, which according to the Civil Law of the Republic of Latvia have a right to register marriages.

Classifications

Data on marriages and divorces are compiled and published in compliance with following classifications:

  • Classification of Administrative Territories and Territorial Units of the Republic of Latvia (CATTU);
  • Classification of Ethnicities;
  • International Standard for country codes and codes for their subdivisions (ISO 3166).

A Classification Catalogue with classification codes and their explanations has been published on the CSB website.

Data collection

Survey method and source data

Data on concluded marriages are acquired from the Information System for Registration of Civil Status Documents of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

Data on divorces are acquired by following the changes in the individual data regarding a person’s legal marital status included in the Population Register of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

Data revision

Short-term (quarterly and monthly) statistics is revised after processing of annual statistical data.

Due to specifics of electronic data processing technologies and rounding adjustments, slight discrepancies may occur between the published data and calculations made by the data users.

Comparability over time

Data on marriages and divorces are comparable since 1946.
