Data on innovations in enterprises are used to calculate number of innovation-active enterprises, their share in number of active enterprises, number of innovation-active enterprises by economic activity, turnover of and number of employees in innovation-active enterprises, number and share of innovation-active enterprises by main type of innovation.

Definitions

An innovation is the implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or process, a new marketing method, or a new organisational method in business practices, workplace organisation or external relations. The minimum requirement for an innovation is that the product, process, marketing method or organisational method must be new (or significantly improved) to the enterprise.

One that has had innovation activities during the period under review, including those with ongoing and abandoned activities.

An innovative enterprise – one that has implemented at least one innovation: technological (product, process), marketing or organizational during the period under review.

Non-technological innovations are organisational and/or marketing innovations.

Technological innovations are product, process, ongoing and/or abandoned innovations.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Community Innovation Survey in Latvia is conducted basing on common Eurostat methodology and is a sample survey.

Data source used to acquire the data is CSB report on research and innovations in enterprises (2-research and innovations).

Target population

Target population of the survey covers all economically active statistical units at the moment when the sample is built – merchants (individual merchants and commercial companies) with 10 employees or more, and market activity enterprises in the NACE Rev. 2 sections B, C, D, E, H, J, K and in the NACE Rev. 2 division 46 and divisions 71, 72 and 73 are to be covered.

Sample size

At the moment when sample is built, the sample frame includes all statistical units meeting the description of the target population. Sample frame was built with the help of Statistical Business Register information. Sample size was set by using Neyman's optimal allocation. The sample was built as stratified simple random sampling.

Number of respondents in the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) in Latvia 2008–2010 comprised 1358, while in the CIS 2010–1012 it was 1573.

Statistical processing

Calculation methods

Information on respondents included in the business sector sample is extrapolated by using weight given to each sample unit.

Estimation calculations are based on the Horvitz-Thompson estimator.

Data revision

The published data are final and are not revised.

Comparability

Comparability over time

Data on the number of innovation-active enterprises are available since 2001.

Data on turnover, number of employees and expenditure on innovations of innovation-active enterprise are available since 2003.

Data on number of innovation-active enterprises and their share by type of innovations are available since 2006.
