Data on educational institutions, teaching staff and enrolment are used to evaluate the number of students, educational institutions and teaching staff in Latvia in breakdown by statistical region and cities under state jurisdiction.

Definitions

Basic schools are educational institutions, which implement full compulsory programmes of basic education (grades 1–9).

Basic studies are a type of studies allowing person to acquire professional higher education qualifications or the bachelor’s degree on the basis of completed general secondary education.

A credit point is an accounting unit of studies that corresponds to the amount of work equalling 40 academic lesson hours (one study week) where up to 50% of the hours are planned to be contact hours with the lecturer.

Full-time studies are a type of studies giving 40 credit points in the academic year with no less than 40 academic hours per week.

Higher education institutions are higher education and scientific institutions that implement academic and professional study programmes as well as are engaged in science, research and creative arts.

College is an educational institution that implements first level professional higher education programmes and offers a possibility to acquire professional qualification of the fourth level. The first level professional higher education programme is implemented after the acquisition of secondary education. The period of its implementation is from two to three years.

Interest-related education means fulfilment of individual educational needs and desires of children and young people (aged 3–25 years).

Part-time studies are a type of studies giving less than 40 credit points in the academic year and less than 40 academic hours per week.

Pre-school education institutions prepare educates for the acquisition of basic education.

Primary schools are educational institutions that implement partial primary education programmes (grades 1–6).

Secondary schools are general education institutions that implement basic and general secondary education programmes (grades 1–12).

Vocational school or other educational institution implementing professional basic education or partial professional secondary education programmes, offering a possibility to obtain the first or second level professional qualification).

Secondary school (professional secondary school or other educational institution implementing professional secondary education programmes, offering a possibility to obtain the third level professional qualification).

Technical school (educational institution implementing professional secondary education programmes, offering a possibility to obtain the third level professional qualification).

Professional education institution, that has acquired the status of professional education competence centre.

Data are collected and compiled by using:

  • Latvian Classification of Education;
  • Classification of Administrative Territories and Territorial Units of the Republic of Latvia (CATTU);
  • Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS);
  • Classification of Occupations;
  • International Standardized Classification of Education (ISCED 1997).

A Classification Catalogue with classification codes and their explanations has been published on the CSB website.

Data collection

Survey method and source data

Data are acquired from:

  • CSB reports: "Vocational education institutions", "Higher education institutions, colleges report";
  • Information on pre-school education institutions, general schools and interest-related education institutions provided by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia.

Pre-school education, basic education and higher education institutions

  • Pre-school education programme is implemented in pre-school education institutions, special pre-school institutions, preparatory groups of general education institutions and interest-related education institutions. Starting from the school year 2002/2003, the preparation of 5/6-year-old children for school is compulsory.
  • Number of basic school graduates includes also the 9th grade graduates who did not obtain the certificate.
  • Number of secondary school graduates includes also the 12th grade graduates who did not gain the certificate.

Vocational education institutions

  • The CSB report "Vocational education institutions" allows acquiring data on activities of vocational education (enrolment by educational programme and school year, enrolment by age and sex, language of instruction, number of personnel (teaching staff)).

Higher education institutions

  • The CSB report "Higher education institutions, colleges report" allows obtaining data on enrolment in higher education institutions and colleges, entrants, graduates with degree or qualification, academic staff, funding and its use.
  • Starting from the school year 1993/1994 higher education institution and college enrolment includes also students of master programmes.
  • Starting from the school year 2003/2004 vocational education institutions ensuring acquisition of the 1st level vocational higher education are included in the number of higher education institutions and colleges.
  • Higher education institution and college and vocational education institution enrolment in breakdown by field of education meets the Latvian Classification of Education approved on 11 May 2004.

Educational institutions of the Republic of Latvia.

Data are acquired with the help of full-scope survey of higher education institutions and colleges and vocational education institutions.

Data on pre-school education institutions are available since 1990.

Data on vocational education institutions are available since 1990.
