Data on the consumption of alcoholic beverages are used to evaluate consumed volume of alcoholic beverages (vodka, grape, fruit and berry vines, cognac, beer etc.) per capita, as well as to estimate consumption of all alcoholic beverages, recalculating into absolute alcohol.

Definitions

Consumption of alcoholic beverages in Latvia which is separately calculated on every group of beverages.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages in Latvia per one person is calculated by dividing alcohol amount consumed in a certain year with the average number of population in the same year

This indicator is calculated both on actually consumed alcohol in every group of beverages and in absolute alcohol.

Indicator of alcoholic beverages consumed in Latvia which is calculated on every group of beverages and on all groups of beverages, recalculating it into absolute alcohol.

By recalculating the data into absolute alcohol, amount of consumed alcohol of every group is recalculated and equated to 100% alcohol.

Additional information

Information on alcoholic beverages is calculated and is not acquired with the help of a survey, but by evaluating circulation of alcoholic beverages in national economy and non-registered part estimated by the experts.

In statistics it is not possible to estimate volume of alcohol consumed precisely, therefore CSB of Latvia is estimating this indicator basing on the method described.

After 2008, consumption of alcoholic beverages is not calculated.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Data on consumption of alcoholic beverages are acquired with the help of calculations, using several data sources.

Data sources are:

  • Statistical survey on production and sale of industrial goods;
  • Data from customs declarations on export and import of goods in trade with third countries;
  • Statistical survey on arrivals and dispatches in trade with European Union countries.

Statistical processing

Calculation methods

Calculations are based on the data mentioned in the data sources.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages equals volume of beverages produced minus volume of beverages exported and plus volume of beverages imported (deducting volume of beverages imported for further processing).

For separate groups of alcoholic beverages a certain volume is calculated (share evaluated by experts); it includes alcohol produced by households, alcohol imported by residents when arriving from other countries, as well as alcohol produced illegally, imported illegally, surrogate alcohol etc.

Data revision

The published data are final and they are not updated.

Comparability

Comparability over time
