Data on breakdown of net turnover of retail trade enterprises are used for the analysis of structure of goods sold.


Retail trade is the resale of new and used goods (sale without transformation) mainly to general public for individual or household consumption or utilisation performed at stores, kiosks, trading places, markets, stands etc., as well as retail trade by enterprises taking mail-orders, street vendors and peddlers, consumer co-operatives, auction houses, etc.

According to Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1) retail trade does not include retail trade of automotive fuel in gas filling stations, but according to NACE Rev. 2 – includes.

Retail trade enterprise is company main economic activity of which is retail trade.

Turnover is income from sale of goods and provision of services, from which trade discounts are subtracted, as well as value added tax (VAT) and other taxes, which are directly related with sale.

Data on retail trade turnover in breakdown by groups of commodities for sale are collected once in five years.

Data are collected and published using the following classifications:

  • 2007
    • Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1);
    • Statistical classification of products by activity (CPA);
  • 2012
    • Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 2);
    • Statistical classification of products by activity (CPA 2008).

A Classification Catalogue with classification codes and their explanations has been published on the CSB website.

In some cases due to specifics of electronic data processing and rounding adjustments, slight discrepancies may occur between totals and sums of components.

In compliance with the Law on Statistics, data on the kinds of products are not published if these products are manufactured by less than 4 enterprises or if one of the enterprises holds a dominant position.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Data on net turnover of retail trade  enterprises are obtained conducting sample survey.

Information is collected from CSB annual report form 5-trade "Report on retail trade turnover by groups of commodities". In 2012 CSB established a shortened annual report form 5-trade "Report on retail trade by groups of commodities (short)".

Target population

All economically active enterprises whose main kind of activity is retail trade (on 2007 – NACE Rev. 1.1 division 52 "Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles; repair of personal and household goods" and from 2012 – NACE Rev. 2 division 47 "Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles"), and which breaks them down in more details.

Sample size

The respondents for the surveys are selected by the stratified random sampling. These enterprises are stratified by kind of activity and Statistical Classification of Economic Activities and turnover. The larger the annual turnover of the company, the higher the probability for this enterprise to be included in the sample.

In 2012 2609 out of 11.5 thousand enterprises were surveyed.

In 2007 3000 out of 11.9 thousand enterprises were surveyed.

Statistical processing

Calculation methods

The data on mathematical methods are extrapolated in total for all country.

The data obtained are compared to Structural Business Statistics data, but as different data selection and processing methods are applied insignificant difference in data is allowed.

Data revision

The data published are final and are not revised, except cases when significant mistakes are found in the company reports.


Comparability over time

Data on net turnover of retail trade enerprises by groups of commodities (NACE Rev. 1.1) are available on 2007.

Data on net turnover of retail trade enerprises by groups of commodities (NACE Rev. 2) are available since 2012.


Confidentiality of the information provided by respondents is protected by the Section 17 of the Statistics Law stipulating rights and obligations of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia and other state authorities producing official statistics. Read more
