Data are used to estimate amount of polluting substances emitted into atmosphere, including pollutants emitted into atmosphere due to leaks in technological devices, by measuring this amount or finding it out basing on methodologies approved by the corresponding sector.


Carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless, odourless, combustible, very poisonous and toxic gas, which is formed in the process of incomplete combustion of all substances containing carbon.

Refers to the amount of polluting substances (including pollutants emitted through not hermetically sealed technological equipment) that are measured either by means of controlling instruments or by applying the confirmed methodology of the respective branch.

Emissions of individual heating are not included.

NOx is a generic term for mono-nitrogen oxides.

These oxides are produced during combustion, and are of interest as air pollution.

They are believed to aggravate asthmatic conditions, react with the oxygen in the air to produce ozone, which is also an irritant, and eventually form nitric acid when dissolved in water.

When dissolved in atmospheric moisture the result can be acid rain which can damage both trees and entire forest ecosystems.

Stationary source is an immobile emitter of polluting substances.

Sulphur dioxide is the chemical compound with the formula SO2.

This gas is the main product forming in the oxidation of sulphur compounds and is of significant environmental concern.

Include wide range of different organic compounds, which have diverse influence on the environment population health.

Relatively they can be divided into two sub-groups: methane (CH4) and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC).

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are organic chemical compounds that under normal conditions have vapour pressures high enough to vaporize and enter the atmosphere.

A wide range of carbon-based molecules, such as aldehydes, ketones, and hydrocarbons are VOC.

The term often is used in a legal or regulatory context, and in such cases the precise definition is a matter of law.

Data collection

Survey method and data source

Data are acquired from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre report 2-Air "Report on air protection".

Statistical population

Enterprises and institutions (operators), which were granted and have valid permissions for the emission of the pollutive substances from the stationary sources, permits for the pollutive activities of A or B category, or certificate for the pollutive activities of C category.

Data revision

Data may be adjusted.


Comparability over time

Data on emission of polluting substances into atmosphere are available since 1990.

International comparability

Environmental statistics on the countries of the European Union are compiled and published on the home page of Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat). The data are located in the section: Database/Environment and energy/Environment.
