Data on activities of heat plants and CHP plants are compiled with an aim to find out the number of heat plants and CHP plants, volume of electricity and heat produced, capacity as well as to estimate heat balance in statistical regions.

Definitions

Simultaneous generation of electricity and heat in the same technological device and cycle using natural gas, biogas, solid fuels, liquid fuels and fuelwood.

Power plant consisting of cogeneration devices and heat peak load boiler devices.

CHP plants are classified according to the purpose of production:

  • public CHP plants main activity of which is production of electricity and heat (NACE Rev. 2 Division 35);
  • autoproducer CHP plants that are generating electricity and heat for their own technological use and selling part of the produced heat (NACE Rev. 2, except NACE Rev. 2 Division 35).

Heat plant is energy transformation production unit producing heat for sale.

Heat plant consists of one or several devices producing heat (boilers).

Heat plants are divided into:

  • public heat plants primary activity of which is generation of heat (division 35 of NACE Rev. 2);
  • autoproducer heat plants are generating heat for their own use and partly for sale (NACE Rev. 2, except division 35 of NACE Rev. 2).

Losses emerging during transportation and supply.

Heat produced during the year by all surveyed heat plants producing heat for sale and by all CHP plants.

Additional information

Data of the table ENG17. NUMBER OF HEAT PLANTS, CAPACITY AND PRODUCED HEAT on heat produced in autoproducer heat plants differ from the information in energy balance, as transformation sector of the energy balance (in compliance with the international methodology) covers data on heat produced for sale in autoproducer heat plants. Heat plants using fuel only for own heating and technological needs are not surveyed. Consumption of fuel in these heat plants is shown in the energy balance – "final consumption".

Data collection

Survey method and source data

Data are acquired with the help of full-scope survey from several data sources:

  • CSB annual statistical report form 1-energy "Report on production of heat and electricity";
  • Annex to the CSB annual statistical report form "Annex to report 1-energy";
  • CSB statistical report form 2-EK "Report on purchase and use of energy resources".

Information is compiled on all branches of national economy. Data in breakdown by fields are compiled by the main kind of economic activity.

Statistical population

Heat plants producing heat for sale and all CHP plants are covered.

Data revision

Data may be adjusted.

Comparability

Comparability over time

Data on number and activities of heat plants and CHP plants are available since 2007.

Data on heat produced in autoproducer heat plants and CHP plants, and type of fuel consumed in breakdown by kind of economic activity and heat balance in breakdown by statistical region are available since 2009.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality of the information provided by respondents is protected by the Section 17 of the Statistics Law stipulating rights and obligations of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia and other state authorities producing official statistics. Read more
