On sown area under principal agricultural crops, production and average yield in 2008

According to the data on sown area under agricultural crops of the Central Statistical Bureau in 2008 cereal area comprised 544.2 thsd ha, and it is 22.3 thsd ha or 4.3% more than in 2007. Share of sown are under cereals in total sown area has grown from 46.3% in 2007 to 49.0% in 2008.

In 2008 1.7 mln tons of cereals were harvested, it comprises the increase of total harvested volume of 154.2 thsd tons or 10%. The average yield of crops has increased from 29.4 cnt from 1 ha in 2007 to 31.0 cnt in 2008.

The significant rise of cereal yield was influenced by the high productivity of winter cereals, especially of winter wheat. Average yield of winter cereals has grown from 35.9 cnt from 1 ha in 2007 to 40.0 cnt in 2008, of which winter wheat – from 37.8 cnt to 43.5 cnt. Total production of cereals from winter cereals has increased by 158.4 thsd tons or by 18.8%, of which winter wheat – by 138.2 thsd tons or 22.9%.

Total production of spring cereals in 2008 was influenced by the unfavourable weather. As sown area increased by 2.4% the yield of spring cereals comprised 4.2 thsd tons or 0.6% less than in previous year. The average yield of spring cereals has decreased from 24.1 cnt from 1 ha in 2007 to 23.4 cnt in 2008.

Structure of total cereal production in 2008, %

In 2008 578.0 thsd tons of cereals were purchased, and it is 115.1 thsd tons or 16.6% less than in previous year. The amount of purchased wheat has reduced by 10.1 thsd tons or by 2.7%, of which amount of food wheat – by 65.7 thsd tons or 28.0%. Also the share of food wheat in the total volume of purchased wheat has decreased from 63.1% in 2007 to 46.7% in 2008. Compared to previous year the volume of purchased rye reduced by 42.7 thsd tons or 27.8%, of wich food rye - 38.5 thsd tons or 33.4% less.

Average purchase prices of cereals also have reduced – from LVL 123.83 per ton in 2007 up to LVL 100.06 per ton in 2008, of which the prices of wheat – from LVL 132.11 to LVL 108.76 per ton, of which of food wheat – from LVL 140.55 to LVL 125.42 per ton, prices of rye – from LVL 114.93 to LVL 83.79 per ton, of which of food rye – from LVL 118.99 to LVL 89.32 per ton.

Nevertheless in 2008 sown are under rape has reduced by 16.6 thsd ha or by 16.7%, the total production of rape seeds has grown by 1.6 thsd tons or by 0.8%, reaching the average yield from 1 ha – 24.0 cnt (in 2007 19.8 cnt). The average yield of winter rape has increased significantly - from 23.5 cnt from 1 ha in 2007 to 30.0 cnt in 2008.

In 2008 areas under potatoes comprised 37.8 thsd ha, and it is 6.1% less than in 2007. Areas of open field vegetables have reduced to 9.5 thsd ha or by 13.5%, but average yield of potatoes and vegetables has increased by 18.7 cnt and 9.6 cnt form 1 ha, respectively.

Total production of vegetables in covered areas has reduced by 2.8 thsd tons or by 18.9%.

Total areas under perennial grass diminished, of which harvested for hay, but the volume of hay from 1 ha has increased – 29.2 cnt in 2008 (in 2007 25.3 cnt).
