Volume of freight carried by road has increased; traffic by rail has decreased

According to the information on freight traffic compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau, in the nine months of 2013 the total volume of freight carried in main transport sectors has remained at the level of previous year (growth of 0.6%) as compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the nine months of 2013 45.4 mln tons of the freight was carried by road, which is an increase of 6.1 mln tons or 15.5% compared to the nine months of the previous year. Growth in the volume of freight was mostly determined by rise of 16.7% in the transportation of gravel, crushed stone and sand and increase of 11.4% in transportation of products of agriculture and forestry, as well as growth of 17.6% in transportation of wood and of products of wood.

The bulk (83%) of the total freight volumes by road was national freight, where the indicator increased by 5.6 million tons (17.4%). Also international freight traffic rose by 0.5 million tons (7%).

Slightly more than one third (37.3%) of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, but 19.2% - by products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products.

In the nine months of this year 41.6 mln tons of freight was carried by rail which is 11.9% less than in the same period of the previous year. Reduction in the volume of freight carried was observed in all types of traffic.

National freights by rail comprised 0.8 mln tons - 0.1 mln tons (10.8%) less than in the corresponding period of 2012. In international traffic the volume of freight carried by rail reduced by 5.5 million tons or 11.9%. In transit freight traffic through Latvia has decreased almost two times – by 45.9%. Export and import freight traffic reduced by 9.8% and 8.6%, respectively. Freight traffic by rail to/from Latvian ports comprised 82.2% of international traffic and dropped by 12.5%.

In the nine months of 2013 4.6 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, rise of 0.5% on the same period of 2012.

Passenger traffic by public transportin the nine months of 2013 grew by 3.9%, as compared to the nine months of the previous year.

Every second passenger of those who used public transport was carried by regular bus traffic lines. In the nine months of 2013 110.8 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is an increase of 2.6% compared to January-September of the previous year. 99.7% of passengers were carried by national bus traffic. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 2.6%, of which in urban routes – by 4.6%, but in regional local routes and regional interurban routes it decreased by 3.4% and 3.7%, respectively. In the international traffic the number of passengers reduced by 1.3%.

Reduction in the number of passengers carried by rail in the nine months of 2013 comprised 0.3%. 98.2% of all passengers carried by rail were carried by national transport. The number of passengers carried by national transport by rail decreased by 0.4%, but in international transport (mainly between Latvia and Russia) - it increased by 4.2%.

In the nine months of 2013 67.5 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, which is an increase of 7.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus grew by 5.2%, but by tramway – by 9.4%.
