Vacancies in the 3rd quarter of 2006

The data of Central Statistical Bureau show that there were 20.6 thsd vacancies, or 2.1% of the total number of employment positions at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2006, which is by 2.7 thsd, or 0.3 percentage points ore than at the end of the 2nd quarter of this year.

The number of vacancies as to the end of the 3rd quarter, as compared with the corresponding period of 2nd quarter, increased by 15.3%.

A bigger share of vacancies within the corresponding period was in private sector – 22.6%, while 7.6% in public sector.

Nevertheless, a higher share of vacancies as to the end of the 3rd quarter of 2006 was in public sector – 3.0% (9.6 thsd vacancies), while it was 1.7% in private sector (11.0 thsd).

Considering the data divided by branches, the biggest share of vacancies was in state administration and defence – 4.6% (3.7 thsd vacancies), transport, warehousing and communications – 3.1% (2.6 thsd), processing – 2.9% (4.7 thsd).

The most rapid growth during the quarter was in processing industry (by 0.8 thsd vacancies), trade (by 0.5 thsd vacancies), and construction (by 0.4 thsd vacancies). On the other hand, the number of vacancies has decreased in mining and quarrying, as well as agriculture, hunting, and fishery.

Amongst basic groups of professions, the highest share of vacancies was for operators of equipment and machinery and assemblers of products – 3.2% (2.9 thsd), qualified workers and artisans – 3.1% (4.1 thsd), senior experts – 2.3 % (3.5 thsd).

When carrying out analysis by regions, it is obvious that the highest share of vacancies at the end of 3rd quarter of 2006 was in Riga (2.6%) and Pierīga region (2.2%). 13.8 thsd vacancies or two-thirds of the total number of vacancies in the country were concentrated in Riga. The lowest share of vacancies in the country was in Vidzeme region (1.2%).

The highest share of vacancies in private sector was in Pierīga region (2.3%), while it was in trhe limitations from 1.2% to 1.8% in other regions.

Viewing the data on public sector by cities and districts, it must be noted that the biggest share of vacancies at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2006 was in Riga (4.5%) and Jūrmala (3.9%), as well as in Jelgava (3.6%), Liepāja (2.4%), Riga district (2.2%), and Valka district (2.0%). In 18 districts out of 26, the share of vacancies did not exceed 1%. The lowest share of vacancies was in the districts of Madona (0.3%), and Jelgava (0.4%).

According to survey methodology, as vacancy a free employment position is being regarded for which no applicant has been chosen, and active measures are being taken by employer to find a suitable candidate, and is ready to fill the vacancy immediately or within the following 3 months. The share of vacancies is being calculated as percentage, dividing the number of vacancies by the total number of employment positions (occupied + free positions).

Public sector comprises state and municipal institutions and commercial enterprises, as well as commercial enterprises with state or municipal capital share 50% and more, establishments, societies and foundations, and their commercial enterprises.
