Use of pesticides on wheat in 2007

07.05.2008

In order to obtain information for the calculations of pesticide risk indicators and to evaluate the opportunities how to eliminate the influence of chemicals damaging health and environment, what is foreseen in the Thematic Strategy of European Commission, within the framework of the pilot project of the Multi-country Transition Facility Programme in 2007 the Central Statistical Bureau carried out a survey on the use of plant protection products1 (PPP) on wheat.

In the result of the survey the information on the wheat area treated with pesticides and data on the volume of active substances2 used were obtained, as well as, indicators characterising the pesticide usage were calculated.

The acquired data show that, in 2007 202.9 thsd ha or 91% of the wheat were treated with PPP, using 229.7 tons of active substances, of which 41.5% were herbicides, 20.2% - fungicides, 1.3% – insecticides, and 37.0% – plant growth regulators.

For the treatment of wheat (including seed treatment before the sowing) active substance of various AAL 61 was used, including 29 substances from the group of fungicides, 20 – of herbicides, 8 – of insecticides and only 4 of plant growth regulators.

According the survey data, in 2007 on average 1.03 kg of active substances were used per 1 ha of wheat.

In Latvia the dosage of pesticides used for the treatment of wheat does not reach the norms maximally permitted. It can partly be explained with the high prices of AAL.

According to the calculations, pesticides are more commonly used in farms with wide areas of wheat.
