Travellers survey data in the 1stquarter of 2006

During 1st quarter of 2006, a survey amongst population was carried out regarding their travel within the boundaries of Republic of Latvia and outside them. Residents in the age from 15 to 74 were inquired.

The results of survey carried out by Central Statistical Board show that 40% of population of Latvia travelled through Latvia, crossing the borders of their city or administrative district, with the purpose of recreation (visiting their relatives, recreating themselves in open air, etc.).

The most common were one-day trips (without staying overnight). They were made by 35% of all population, each spending in average 10.4 Ls per trip. 12% of population preferred short recreation trips (1-3 days), spending in average 13.5 Ls per trip. 2% of population undertook long recreation trips through Latvia (4 and more days) and spent in average 25.4 Ls per trip. Females made more recreation trips (53%). Most travellers were in the age between 25 and 44 years.

In their recreation travel, the population mostly used private accommodation – 91%. Most travellers employed their cars – 62%.

The most preferred destinations of travellers in Latvia were Riga, Jurmala, and Daugavpils. 33.9% of all recreation trips were made to Riga, and the share of one-day trips (without staying overnight) was 37.4%. 18.3% of all short recreation trips (1-3 days) and 22.9% of all long recreation trips (4 days and more) through Latvia were made to Riga.

The average duration of recreation trips was 2.1 days. The average duration of long recreation trips was 6.4 days.

1.8% of residents in the age from 15 to 74 years made business trips within the boundaries of Latvia with staying overnight, spending in average 13.5 Ls per trip. Males made more such trips – 57.4%. Most business trips were made by population in the age between 25 and 44 years. Most frequently, the destination of business trips was Riga – 13.3%. The most frequently employed transportation devices were cars – 66.1%. The average duration of stay in business trips was 2.5 days.

In short recreation trips with staying overnight (1-3 nights), 82.4% of population travelled through Latvia, and 17.0% travelled abroad. Only 0.6% travelled both through Latvia and abroad.

In long recreation trips (4 and more nights), 49.0% of population travelled through Latvia, and 51.0% travelled abroad.

In business trips, 66.8% of population travelled only through Latvia, 30.9% travelled abroad, and 2.2% travelled both through Latvia and abroad.
