Today the European Statistics Day is being celebrated

20.10.2016

Today, on 20 October, the European statistical community for the first time will celebrate the European Statistics Day. The day aims at raising awareness about the importance of official statistics in society and decision-making by telling about the value of independent, impartial, qualitative and internationally comparable data. This year, the motto of the European Statistics Day states – BETTER DATA. BETTER LIVES.

Today, on the Conference of European Statistics Stakeholders held in Budapest it has been planned to present the Quality Declaration of the European Statistical System that explains principles of ensuring high quality in official statistics and emphasises quality as the value added of the official statistics compared to other sources of information.

On the European Statistics Day, statistical facts about Latvia and the EU will be published on the CSB Twitter and Facebook accounts, and all account followers are welcome to give a try and participate in the quiz Are you smarter than a statistician?(in Latvian).

The statistical authorities of the Member States, including the CSB, have been working together with Eurostat
in the European Statistical System to produce reliable and comparable official statistics. The European official statistics is used by governments to guide their policy, by enterprises to support their decisions and by citizens to judge government policies and to compare themselves with others.

It has been planned to celebrate the European Statistics Day every year, and the UN World Statistics Day – once in five years.

In Latvia, in honour of the European Statistics Day, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and the School of Data Latvia are organising Data Expedition that will be held at 18.15 o'clock in the CSB Information Centre at street Lāčplēša 1. Within the framework of the Expedition, the participants will seek for stories in the CSB foreign trade, socio-economic, spatial, etc., data. Participants will have access to all CSB data (available in a suitable form). The Expedition participants will be grouped by the experience and skills thereof. The expected outcome of the Expedition – data-based stories, application prototypes, etc. projects.

The School of Data Latvia is an international network created for promoting data literacy. As a member of the network, the School of Data Latvia is working on helping the non-governmental organisations, journalists, public sector institutions and citizens to work with data more effectively, contributing to better, more equitable and long-standing society.
