On the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the country in the 1st quarter of 2009

In accordance with the requirements of European Parliament and Council Directive 95/57/EC of December 19, 2001 Central Statistical Bureau carried out a survey on domestic trips. Starting with 2009 due to the changes in methodology recreational trips with overnight stays made within own administrative region are counted (prior only those made outside of the administrative region were counted).

Results of the survey show that during the 1st quarter of 2009 the number of recreational trips with overnight stays comprised 572.9 thsd, and it is 4.4% more than in the 1st quarter of 2008. Data show that only 2% of recreational trips with overnight stays were made within the boundaries of own administrative region.

Out of the total number of recreational trips with overnight stays 523.8 thsd were short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) - 2.7% more than in the 1st quarter of previous year, and 49.1 thsd long recreational trips (4 and more visitor nights), and it is 27.9% more than in the 1st quarter of 2008.

Most often destinations of the travellers who stayed overnight were Riga, districts of Riga and Tukums. 11.9% of the total number of recreational trips with overnight stays were made to Riga, 7.1% - to the district of Riga and 5.2% - to the district of Tukums.

The average length of recreational trips with staying overnight was 2.1 visitor nights, of which the average length of the long trips was 8.0 visitor nights.

11% of population preferred recreational trips with overnight stays, and during single trip one traveller on average spent LVL 20.0, and it is LVL 1.1 more than in the 1st quarter of 2008.

The majority of residents travelling for recreational purposes and staying overnight were accommodated in private lodgings. Women constituted the majority of the recreational travellers (57.8%). The majority of travellers were aged 25-44 years (35.9%).

22.9 thsd residents made business trips with overnight stays in Latvia. During a business trip one traveller on average spent LVL 31.1. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 57.2%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.
