In spring of 2007 the statisticians will conduct a running survey ‘’Households` use of the Internet
For already the forth year the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) with the financial support of the European Commission conducts a survey of households the main objective of which is to obtain information on the accessibility of computers and the Internet, the types of connection and devices that provide Internet connection. Will be obtained data about frequency of technology use, places of use, activities made in Internet, purchases made in Internet shops, skills on work with computer etc. The survey data on use of computer and Internet in households will be compiled by their structure and level of income, as well as divided by regions, but data on people, who use these technologies, divided by different age groups, sex, level of education, employment and regions.
Such survey is carried out in all European Union (EU) member states, and for this reason the results acquired will be compared not only with results of previous years, but also with those of other countries.
Before the start of the survey an informative letter will be mailed to households indicating the possible time when the interview might take place as well as a small booklet explaining the objective of the survey, its implementation, the possibilities of using the survey data and information about the confidentiality of individual data. Calling by the indicated telephone number, the respondent will agree on the most suitable date and time for the interview. Upon arrival to the household, the interviewer will produce his/her identity card with a photograph, pose the questions contained in the questionnaire and enter the answers in the questionnaire form.
The households participating in this survey were selected with method of simple random sampling. Each household and persons living in it were given a code, and in further survey individual information about persons will not be used and it will not be possible to identify it.
The aggregated data obtained as a result of the survey will serve as the source of information on the situation in the sector of information society and will be used in order to plan the Internet use possibilities and the related development of economic and social processes. The results will be published in the data collection “Information Society”, in the database of the CSB home page and in the Statistical Yearbook of Latvia. The statistical data characterising the information and communications technology will be available in the Eurostat database (www.eurostat.cec.eu.int).
The CSP urges the households to be responsive and obliging and to co-operate with the interviewers actively as every response is important for the acquisition of qualitative data.
After the compilation and analysis of survey data every inhabitant of Latvia will have a possibility to get acquainted with the results on the CSB home page (www.csb.gov.lv). The results of the surveys conducted in previous years are already available on the said home page.
According to the Latvia and EU laws about protection of individual data the information received from the respondents will not be published, but used only in general, compiled way, that will fully exclude the opportunity to identify the data received from each person separately.
