On sown area under principal agricultural crops, production and average yield in 2007

Compared to 2006, in 2007 the total sawn area of cereals continues to increase, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau on sown area under principal agricultural crops in 2007. In comparison with previous year it has increased by 10.1 thsd ha or 2.0%. In 2007 there were harvested 1.5 mln tons of cereals – the biggest total production since 1991. Compared to 2006, 376.5 thsd tons of crops were harvested, it comprises an increase of 32.5%. The average yield of crops has increased from 22.6 cnt from 1 ha in 2006 to 29.4 cnt in 2007.

Compared to previous year, production of winter cereals has grown by 233.2 thsd tons or 38.3%. The total sown area of winter cereals has also increased noticeably – rise of 24.1 thsd ha or 11.4%.

The share of winter wheat in total sown area of cereals continues to grow. In 2007 30.5% of total area of cereals was sown with winter wheat (in 2006 – 29.8%).

Compared to previous year, in 2007 total production of spring cereals has increased by 143.3 thsd ha or 26.1%, nevertheless, total sown area has decreased by 14.0 thsd ha or 4.7%. The average yield of spring cereals has increased from 18.2 cnt from 1 ha in 2006 to 24.1 cnt in 2007.

In comparison with previous year, proportion of withered cereals and cereals that were not harvested has decreased. In 2007 withered or not harvested were 13.9 thsd ha of area sawn with cereals or 2.7% of the sawn areas (in 2006 - 19.5 thsd ha or 3.5%).

Data compiled on the crop purchases in crop procurement and processing enterprises and businesses shows that, in 2007 totally 693.1 thsd tons of cereals were bought - 222.8 thsd tons or 47.4% more compared to previous year. The amount of purchased wheat has grown by 85.2 thsd tons or by 29.7%, of which amount of food wheat – by 61.2 thsd tons or 35.3%. The share of food wheat in the total number of purchased wheat continues to rise. In 2007 this share constituted 63.1% (in 2006 - 60.5%). In 2007 there were purchased 82.9 thsd tons of rye what is 2.2 times more compared to previous year, of which there were purchased 58.6 thsd tons of food rye – 2.2 times more, respectively.

Average purchase prices of cereals also have grown remarkably – from LVL 73.33 per ton in 2006 up to LVL 123.83 per ton in 2007, of which the prices of wheat – from LVL 77.83 to LVL 132.11 per ton, of which of food wheat – from LVL 81.50 to LVL 140.55 per ton, prices of rye – from LVL 66.75 to LVL 114.93 per ton, of which of food rye – from LVL 68.21 to LVL 118.99 per ton.

The areas of pulses have also grown by 13.1%, and their total production - by 1.2 thsd tons or 84.2%.

The sawn areas of rape continue to grow - in 2007 they have reached 99.2 thsd ha, what is 16.0 thsd ha more compared to 2006, of which the sawn area of winter rape has increased by 23.5 thsd ha, but sawn areas of spring rape has reduced by 7.5 thsd ha. Also the total production of rape has increased by 76.3 thsd tons, thus reaching the average yield of 19.8 cnt from 1 ha. The total production of winter rape seeds has increased by 61.8 thsd tons or 2.1 times, but of spring rape – by 14.5 thsd tons or 22.7%.

Sawn area of potatoes constituted 40.3 thsd ha, what is 10.6% less compared to 2006. Areas of vegetables reached 11 thsd ha – decrease of 18.5%. But the average yield of potatoes from 1 ha has increased by 37 cnt. The total production of all kinds of vegetables, counting grown in hothouses has decreased by 18.5 thsd tons or by 10.6%.

Nevertheless, the total are of perennial grass land has grown, the areas of this grass harvested for hay has reduced by 2.4%.
