On sown area, production and average yield of principal agricultural crops in 2009

16.02.2010

Data on sown areas of principal agricultural crops compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau show that in 2009 cereal areas comprised 540.8 thsd ha, and it is 3.4 thsd ha or 0.6% less than in 2008, but if compared to average volume of last five years – the number has grown by 9%.

In comparison with the year before, the share of cereals in total sown area almost has not changed (48.6% in 2009 and 49.0% in 2008), but the structure of sown areas has changed. As the share of spring cereals has reduced, the share of winter cereals has increased from 46.0% in 2008 to 54.5% in 2009.

In 2009 1.7 mln tons of grain were harvested, and it is only slightly less than a year before – reduction of 26.3 thsd tons or 1.6%. Also average yield of cereals has slightly diminished - from 31.0 cnt from 1 ha in 2008 to 30.8 cnt in 2009.

Total production of cereals at almost the same level as a year before was influenced by the growth of total production of winter cereals (increase of 41.3 thsd tons or 4.1%), sown areas of winter cereals rose by 17.6%, respectively. It should be noted that this increase was mainly influenced by the noticeable rise of areas and total production of winter wheat – by 42.0 thsd ha or by 24.7% and by 78.9 thsd tons or by 10.6%. Share of winter wheat in total area of winter cereals in 2009 reached 72% (in 2008 - 68%).

Share of withered cereals and cereals that were not harvested in 2009 comprised 11.8 thsd ha or 2.2% of the total cereal sown area. Sown area of buckwheat comprised more than a half of area not harvested – 5.2 thsd ha or 51.5%.

In 2009 1158.9 thsd tons of grain were purchased, and it is 580.9 thsd tons or 2 times more than a year before. The amount of purchased wheat has grown by 448.9 thsd tons or 2.2 times, of which amount of food wheat – by 368.8 thsd tons or 3.2 times. The share of food wheat in total volume of purchased wheat reached 66.3% (in 2008 – 46.7%). The volume of purchased rye comprised 35.5 thsd tons or 31.9% more than a year before, of which food rye – 27.1 thsd tons or 35.3% more.

Average purchase prices of grain continued to reduce – from LVL 100.06 per ton in 2008 to LVL 73.25 per ton in 2009 and reached the average purchase price level of 2006, because in world markets generally grain offer is noticeably higher than demand. Prices of wheat reduced from LVL 108.76 to LVL 79.75 per ton, of which prices of food wheat from LVL 125.42 to LVL 85.11 per ton, prices of rye – from LVL 83.79 to LVL 56.02 per ton, of which prices of food rye – from LVL 89.32 to LVL 57.22 per ton.

In 2009 sown area of rape grew by 10.7 thsd ha or by 13.0%, total production of rape seeds increased by 6.2 thsd tons or by 3.1%. The average yield has decreased from 24.0 cnt in 2008 to 21.9 cnt in 2009. The growth of total production was influenced by the increase of winter rape sown areas – by 12.0 thsd ha or by 24.6%. In 2009 sown area of winter rape comprised 65% of the total sown area of rape (in 2008 - 59%).

In 2009 areas of potatoes comprised 30.0 thsd ha, and it is 20.6% less than in 2008. Areas of open field vegetables have diminished to 8.2 thsd ha or by 13.1%, average production of vegetables from 1 ha has grown from 138 cnt in 2008 to 207 cnt in 2009. In 2009 182.5 thsd tons of vegetables were grown (including vegetables in greenhouses), and it is 39.3 thsd tons or 27.4% more than a year before.

In 2009 hay production from perennial grassland has reduced by 2.3%, but total production of green feed and silage rose by 79.3%, if compared to 2008.
