Riga is hosting the 100th Conference of the Directors Generals of the National Statistical Institutes (DGINS)

The 100th conference of the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes (DGINS) and and 22nd meeting of the European Statistical System Committee(ESSC) organised by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) takes place in Hotel Radisson Blu Daugava, Riga on 24 - 26 September.

The DGINS conference is an important forum for discussing ESS development trends and future prospects: issues related to the statistical programmes, methods and statistical production process. Every year DGINS conference is hosted by one of the ESS member states. The first DGINS conference was held in Luxembourg in 1953.

The conference in Riga will be attended by Walter Radermacher, Director General of Eurostat, EU statistical office, Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis, Minister of Economics of the Republic of Latvia, Aija Žīgure, president of the CSB, as well as by 39 representatives of European national statistical authorities. Among the participants there are representatives of Eurostat, European Commission, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, European Statistical Advisory Committee, European Central Bank, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and European Free Trade Association.

DGINS 2014 in Riga will focus on global business statistics. Discussions will cover topics like role of business statistics in decision-making processes, evaluation of business activities and globalisation processes, as well as development of possible indicators that would capture the growing influence of globalisation on the economy. 

The previous DGINS conferences focused on a number of topics related to the statistical system, such as codes of practice, migration statistics, reduction of administrative burden, availability of statistical data for the assessment of the green economy, use of geographic information systems in statistics and many more.
